The eleventh century Arab polymath Ibn al-Haytham (known in Latin as Alhazen) conducted his research in optics by way of controlled experimental testing and applied geometry, especially in his investigations into the images resulting from the reflection and refraction of light. أجرى العالم العربي في القرن الحادي عشر ابن الهيثم (المعروف في اللاتينية باسم الهازين) بحثه في البصريات عن طريق اختبار تجريبي تسيطر عليها والهندسة التطبيقية، وخاصة في تحقيقاته في الصور الناتجة عن انعكاس وانكسار الضوء.
In The Model of the Motions, Ibn al-Haytham also describes an early version of Occam's razor, where he employs only minimal hypotheses regarding the properties that characterize astronomical motions, as he attempts to eliminate from his planetary model the cosmological hypotheses that cannot be observed from Earth. وفي المخطوطة، وصف ابن الهيثم أيضًا تصوّرا مبكرا لشفرة أوكام، حيث افترض وجود بعض الخصائص التي تميز الحركات الفلكية في حدها الأدنى، في محاولة منه في نموذجه للكواكب لتجاهل الفرضيات الكونية التي لا يمكن ملاحظتها من الأرض.
